We got a newfound appreciate for agriculture management in the first few months.  Our first venture was land leasing and bartering.  We quickly learned that people who lease land don't care for the it like you would!  Now in full retirement and moved to a country setting, we turned our sights on cattle.  Pure-breed or mixed breed?  The 4DD crew went with mixed breed cattle which offered a blend of hearty breeds and much lower cost. By this time is was 'Just the Two of Us" to run the "shop".  Learning the "rules-of-thumb" have been invaluable turning the ranch operation into a functioning business.  But without a doubt making this type of move from a city to country setting is not for the weak of mind or body.  Over the years we have transitioned from an urban lifestyle to a very active rural routine.  We hope you enjoy visiting our website from time to time and look for more tips, rules of thumb and learnings we gain over time.  Like us, we hope you choose a different direction in retirement, ranch life isn't for everyone, but it can be rewarding (financially & physically) if you have the right attitude and mindset as you enter your twilight years!

HISTORY

The first plot of land was purchased in 2006.  The idea was to redirect retirement savings into land and avoid traditional stocks & bonds.  Little did we know what would come next.    Thinking land ownership was simply an investment that grows over time, it wasn't any time before we learned a better plan for the land was needed.  Learning by experience and talking with folks was the best path forward, but not without problems.
